Kissing the baby's cheek, my husband rushed out of the door, into his busy day. With the cold of the morning fading(逐渐消失),I fed my baby and it fell fast asleep. Usually l would place it in bed and  16  have my house in order.
This morning, however, I stayed seated, just thinking, with the baby in my arms. The thoughts ran into memories of the morning with my husband, a father rushing out of the door to meet the duties of life. It was only a small jump to thoughts of my own  17  .
My mother passed away when l was ten, and as I  18  back, I could see how much of a family man my dad was. He went to work every morning and  19  to his family every evening. He provided food, clothing, warmth and protection. He was a faithful father.
Setting the baby down, I dialed the  20  number. I had just realized the importance of the ordinary-the daily life going on around us that we are so used to, and that it needed to be recognized.
“Hi, Dad.” I said, fighting back  21  .
“Hey, Melissa! How are you?”  22  was in his voice.
“Fine, I'm just calling to say-Thank you.” I got it out  23  my throat became too much for me to speak.
    “What for?'
“For getting up and going to work every morning. Now that I have my own child and I see my husband doing the same. I just wanted to  24  you for being faithful, ”
There was silence for a moment as my dad comforted himself, and with a small tremble(颤抖)in his voice he said, 'You're welcome, Melissa.”
I don't remember much of the rest of the call, but that moment and the words my father said, I will never forget. There are those who are known for their heroic deeds, and also those who are known for their fortune(运气)and  25  , but it is the ordinary everyday fathers who are the true heroes. I'm grateful that my father was one of them.

People think of ice cream as an American food. Yet, ice cream really came from Asia. In the late 1200s Marco Polo, the great explorer, is said to have seen rich Asians eating dishes of ice. Camels had brought the ice from distant mountains. Before it was served, the ice had been flavored (调味)with fruits.
Marco Polo brought this new dish to Italy, In France cooks changed the ice recipe (配方)and made ice cream.
At first, cooks tried to keep the recipe a secret. They wanted it to be a special dish for rich people. By the late 1700s, though, ice cream was sold throughout Europe and America.
Some great Americans loved ice cream. George Washington was the first to buy a special machine for making it. When Thomas Jefferson returned from France, he brought an ice cream recipe home with him. Dolly Madison, wife of President James Madison, also liked ice cream, and she often served it at the White House. Actually, a famous brand (品牌)of ice cream was even named after her.
In the late 1800s, the ice cream industry began to grow. A way of keeping ice cream frozen had been found, so ice cream makers did not have to worry about ice cream melting(融化)anymore.

A person s nose is important for breathing and smelling. The nose is also used in many popular expressions.
Some people are able to “lead other people by the nose'. For example, if a wife 'leads her husband by the nose', she makes him do whatever she wants him to do.
It's always helpful when people ‘‘keep their nose out of other people's business'. They don't interfere(干涉). The opposite of this is someone who 'nose around' all the time. This kind of person is interested in other people's private matters. He is considered 'nosey'.
One unusual expression is ' that is no skin off my nose'. This means that a situation does not affect me. We also say that sometimes a person 'cuts off his nose to spite his face'. That is, he makes a situation worse for himself by doing something foolish because he is angry.
More problems can develop if a person 'looks down his nose' at someone or something. The person acts like someone or something is unimportant or worthless. This person might also 'turn up his nose' at something that he considers not good enough. This person thinks he is better than everyone else. He has his 'nose in the air'.
In school, some students 'thumb their nose' at their teachers. They refuse to obey orders or do any work. Maybe these students don't know the correct answers. My mother always told me, if you study hard, the answers should be 'right under your nose' or easily seen.
(    )29. A person who leads other people by the nose is perhaps _______.
    A. a hard-working worker in a factory
    B. an ordinary student in a class

    D. wants to find out others' secrets
(    )31. If something is no skin off your nose, you will_______.
    A. not be influenced by it                 B. pay much attention to it
    C. feel excited about it                     D. worry about it
(    )32. Who is most probably popular with other people?
    A. A woman who cuts off her nose to spite her face.
    B. A man who keeps his nose out of others' business.
    C. A beautiful girl who has her nose in the air.
    D. A clever boy who thumbs his nose at his teacher.
C
Life comes in a package. This package includes happiness and
sadness, failure and success, hope and despair. Life is a learning
process. Experiences in life teach us new lessons and make us a better
person. With each passing day we learn to deal with various situations.
Love plays a main role in our life. Love makes you feel wanted. Without love a person could become cruel. In the early stage of our life, our parents are the
ones who show us with love and care. They teach us about what is right and wrong, good and bad. But we don't always care about it. It is only after marriage and having kids that a person understands others' feelings.
Happiness can bring people a peaceful mind. No mind is happy without  peace. Sadness is the cause of the death of a loved one or the failure. But all of  these things will pass away.
Failure is the path to success. It helps us to touch the sky, teaches us to survive and shows us a specific way. Success brings in money, pride and self-respect.
Hope is what keeps life going. Parents always hope their children will do  well. Hope makes us dream. Hope builds in patience. Life teaches us not to  despair even in the darkest hour, because after every night there is a day.
Life teaches us not to regret over yesterday, for it has passed and is out of  our control. Tomorrow is unknown, for it could either be bright or dark. So the only choice is to work hard today, so that we will enjoy a better tomorrow.
(    )33. We usually have to accept _______ if we want to be successful.

       A.颓废               B.遗憾        C.悲伤               D.绝望
(    )36. What's the meaning of the last sentence of the whole passage?
    A. When choosing between 'today' and 'tomorrow', you'd better enjoy tomorrow.
    B. If you work hard today, you'll have a better life in the future.
    C. What you can only choose is to work hard today rather than tomorrow.
    D. The only choice you make is that you should enjoy a better tomorrow.
D
These days haze(雾霾)is around us here and there. In fact, everyone has the power to change their living habits to help reduce it. Many local governments call on their people to take action to make the air cleaner.
Transport is one of the biggest contributors(促成物)to haze. When, where, how, why and what you drive all affect air quality. When one drives to work for one year, he uses as much energy as a bus rider uses in 10 years. So walk or ride your bicycle to work or school whenever possible. If it is necessary, you can use public transport instead of your car. Each person using
public transport for a year instead of a car can save nearly a tonne of pollutants, including CO2, from going into the atmosphere.
Carpooling is another way to reduce carbon emissions(排放).Carpooling is the sharing of car journeys so that more than one person travels in a car. It immediately reduces your car's emissions by half.
What you do inside your living space can have a big effect on the air quality outside it. You can do a lot of things inside and around your home that will help you pollute less and save some money.
A large amount of our energy supply comes from burning coal, another contributor to haze. By cutting down your electricity use, you are cutting down on haze. So you may try to reduce your use of electricity by turning off lights, using your air conditioner wisely during the summer months, or updating some of your electrical appliances to low-energy models. For example, you can use energy-saving lamps that require less energy and last i0 times longer than common bulbs.
(    )37. Which does the writer think should play an important role in reducing haze?
    A. City cleaners.                        B. Haze producers.
    C. Local governments.                D. Common people.
(    )38. We can infer(推断)from the passage that the writer thinks _______.

    D. cars may cause the most serious pollution of all

    A. we can save a lot of money by using less energy
