By the end of this lesson, students are expected to:
1. grasp the main idea by skimming and find the detailed information by scanning.
2. develop reading skills such as predicting, fast reading and detailed reading.
3.realize the importance of protecting the earth and making the world better.
2学情分析
本节课是八年级牛津英语第五单元拓展阅读Scientist discovers a sixth sense,主要围绕a sixth sense,介绍了什么是a sixth sense,Dr Sheldrake是通过什么方式来证明a sixth sense的存在。 学生对第六感带有浓厚的兴趣,因而参与度较高,特别是在做实验和小组分享讨论故事环节。

活动1【导入】Pre-task
Let the Ss review 5 senses and guess the 6th sense
活动2【讲授】While-task
1. skim the article and divide it into 3 parts
2. do True or False according to paragraph 1-2.
3. complete the table according to para4.
4. answer questions according to para5
5. listen to para6 and fill in the blanks.

By the end of the lesson, 
1. students will be familiar with and get a general picture of the whole story.
2. students can use  proper adjectives to describe John’s personality.
3. students will improve their reading skills, including skimming and scanning.
4. students will realize it is important to face frustration in life and get to know some of the ways of dealing with it.

Guide Ss to read the story again and gather some details for the following questions.
