Recently I did carpooling (拼车)for the first time and it was wonderful. It was easy to find a driver. I used a carpooling website and found someone who was going to the same place as me. The website provided a lot of information about the drivers, such as their first names, ages and jobs as well as reviews from passengers. I decided to travel with a lady who had very good reviews. I paid for my share of the petrol(汽油) through the website and waited for her in the town centre.
It may seem quite scary to travel with a stranger but there are some safety tips. Firstly, the driver cannot receive your money until you text him or her a code (密码) at the end of your journey. Without the code, the driver will not get paid from the website. Secondly, it is important to read all the drivers’ information before choosing who you want to travel with. Lastly, you’d better travel with a friend.
I had a very good experience of carpooling. Not only was the trip very cheap, but the driver was really friendly. Carpooling could be the future of travel. As train and petrol prices are rising, this cheaper form of travel will benefit both drivers and passengers. However, perhaps more importantly, carpooling is a great way to live green.
23. On a carpooling website, you may not find____________.
A. how old the driver is                                      B. how the driver makes a living
C. what others think of the driver                       D. what the driver used to be like
24. The writer chose to travel with a lady mainly because___________.
     A. she was pretty beautiful                             B. she went to the same place as him
     C. she had a good job                                     D. she had good reviews
25. We can infer that in the future ___________.
A. few people would like to travel                      B. travelling alone will become cheaper
C. more and more people will do carpooling              D. no one would like to travel by train
B
   One Stormy Night 一个风雨交加的夜晚
One stormy night many years ago, an old couple entered a small hotel in Philadelphia. They went up to the front desk hoping to get some shelter(躲避处) for the night.
'Could you possibly give us a room here?' the husband asked. The clerk (职员), a friendly man with a winning smile, explained that there were three conventions in town.
'All of our rooms are taken,' the clerk said. 'But I can’t send a nice couple like you out into the rain at one o’clock in the morning. Would you perhaps be willing to sleep in my room? Perhaps it will be good enough to make you comfortable for the night.'
When the couple refused politely, the young man pressed on. 'Don’t worry about me; I’ll make out just fine.' So the couple agreed.
As he paid the next morning, the elderly man said to the clerk, 'You are the kind of manager who should be the boss of the best hotel in the United States. Maybe someday I’ll build one for you.' The clerk looked at them and smiled. The three of them had a good laugh.
Two years passed. The clerk had almost forgotten about it when he received a letter from the old man, with a round-trip ticket to New York, asking the young man to pay them a visit.
The old man met him in New York, and led him to the corner of Fifth Avenue and 34th Street. He then pointed to a great new high building there, a palace of reddish stone.
'That,' said the older man, 'is the hotel I have just built for you to manage.'
'You must be joking,' the young man said.
     'Of course not.'
The young clerk became the first manager of Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. But he never foresaw (预见) the turn of events.
26. From the text, we can infer that the old couple ________.
     A. were too poor to stay in an expensive room
     B. made a reservation in the hotel in advance
     C. were in town to find a good manager.
     D. were quite rich
27. The underlined word “conventions” in Paragraph 2 most probably means “________” .

After a cold winter, I was looking for something different. And I did find it. It was about twenty miles outside of Guadalajara, Mexico in a most unusual spa called Rio Caliente.
You probably won't find Rio Caliente in the guidebooks. We called Rio Caliente's booking agent in California for one. The price, 670 dollars each, for a ten-day stay which included three vegetarian meals a day, plus spa activities seemed too good to be true.
Getting off the plane in Guadalajara, it was easy to forget the winter we had just left behind. A taxi ride to Rio Caliente would cost us 90 pesos each. We calculated quickly and figured the 20-mile trip would cost us about 24 dollars.
Suddenly, we saw Rio Caliente up ahead! A large gate swung open and we drove in. It seemed we were transported into a magical paradise! Everything seemed lush(茂盛) and green, with beautiful, colorful flowers dotting the grounds.
Rio Caliente is situated in a national pine forest. Rio Caliente, which means ' hot river' , sits on an ancient Indian healing ground. The entire area rests on a deep underground volcanic(由火山形成的) lake which supplies numerous springs and waterfalls(瀑布) along three sides of the spa. The water rises out of the ground at temperatures as high as 157 F deuces. The mineral content of the water is particularly beneficial. The combination of salts and minerals, including lithium, is wonderful to soak in, and even more soothing to drink when cooled.
Meals were fantastic. They were mostly grains, fruits, soups, and vegetables. They •ere all delicious, and I managed to lose a few pounds even though I ate a great deal each meal. Each morning we would take a different route, always seeing something wonderful and mysterious. One morning, we walked to the mouth of a hot river, which steams out of me earth. Another time, we went to a very deep hole where Indian women, hundreds of years ago, sacrificed the most worthless man from the tribe into. I didn't get too close to the edge. Susan and I took two trips to Guadalajara when we were there. Guadalajara is a beautiful city. The historical section of town is splendid, with its museums and cathedral. We did some shopping and were delighted with the bargains.
On our last day we said good-bye to our new friends, and headed down towards the airport. The ten-day vacation had opened me up to a new country. The price is right, and the place is magical!
29. It is not said, but we can infer when the writer saw Rio Caliente in front of him, he was

30. Which of the following statements is not mentioned?

A new study finds that plants communicate with one another to warn of danger.
We often consider plants as the furniture of the natural world. They don’t move; they don’t make sounds, they don’t seem to act on anything. But as is often the case, plants talk to each other all the time. And the language is chemical.
Over the years, scientists have reported that different types of plants, from trees to tomatoes, give out chemicals into the air to help neighboring plants. These chemical warnings can spread information about one plant’s disease or infestation(虫害), so other plants can protect themselves. But how plants receive and act on many of the information exactly is still mysterious.
In this week’s Science Magazine, researchers in Japan offered some explanations. They have found out one chemical message and traced it all the way from beginning to end.
The scientists looked at tomato plants infested by a common pest(害虫). To start out, they grew plants in two separate plastic spaces connected by a tube(管子). One plant was infested and placed upwind and the other was uninfested and placed downwind. The downwind plants were later exposed(暴露) to the pest. The results showed that plants near sick neighbors before were able to protect themselves better against the pest.
They found one chemical appeared more often in the exposed plants. The chemical is called HexVic. The scientists discovered where HexVic come from, and put it over healthy plants. Those plants were then able to produce HexVic. Researchers made sure that uninfested plants could fight off bugs and diseases. How do they know when to protect themselves? They are warned first by their friendly plant neighbors.
It is not a simple story, and it may be happening in more plant species than tomatoes. It may also be happening with more chemical signals that are still unknown to us. In a word, we know that plants not only communicate, but also look out for one another.
32. The underlined “traced” in the fourth paragraph probably means _________ here.
A. reported                 B. followed                C. doubted                 D. developed
33. For scientists, which are the right steps to watch tomato plants infested by a pest?
① Place the infested plant upwind.
② Place the uninfested plant downwind.
③ Expose the downwind plants to the pest.
④ Grow plants in two separate plastic spaces connected by a tube.
A. ③①②④                    B. ④③②                    C. ①②③                    D. ④①③
34. You can put the sentence “The researches also studied leaves from exposed plants and unexposed plants.” At the beginning of
A. Paragraph 3           B. Paragraph 4           C. Paragraph 5         D. Paragraph 6
35. Which of the following can be the best title of this passage?
A. Communicating Plants and Terrible Diseases
B. Talking Plants and Friendly Warnings
C. Protecting Plants and Clear Information
D. Growing Plants and Mysterious Chemicals
