It was a sunny Saturday afternoon in Oklahoma City. My friend, Bobby Lewis was taking his two little boys to play golf. He walked up to the man at the ticket counter and said, “How much is it to get in?”
The young man replied, “$ 3.00 for you and $ 3.00 for any kid who is older than six. We let them in free if they are six or younger. How old are they?”
Bobby replied, “The younger is three and the older is seven, so I guess I should pay you $6.00.”
The man at the ticket counter said, “Hey, Mister, did you just win the lottery (彩票) or something? You could have saved yourself three bucks. You could have told me that the older one was six; I wouldn’t have known the difference.” Bobby replied, “Yes, that may be true, but the kids would have known the difference.”

The world is in danger. At one time there were 1,300 different plants, trees and flowers in Holland, but now only 860 remain (剩余). The others have been destroyed by man. We are changing the earth, the air, the water, and everything that grows and lives. We can’t live without these things. If we continue doing like this, we will destroy ourselves.
What will happen in the future? Perhaps it is more important to ask, “What must we do now?” The people who will be living in the world of tomorrow are the young of today. A lot of them know that conservation (对自然环境的保护) is necessary. Many are helping to save our world. They plant trees, protect animals in forest, and so on. In a small town in the United States, a large group of volunteers cleaned the banks of their rivers. Young people may hear about conservation through a record called No One’s Going to Change Our World. It was made by the Beatles, Cliff Richard and other singers. The money from it will help to protect wild animals.

In the USA, there are many types of restaurants. Fast food restaurants are very famous. You can find McDonald’s and Kentucky Fried Chicken in many countries around the world. You look at a menu above the counter (柜台), and say what you’d like to eat. You pay the person who serves you. You take your food and sit down or take it away. There’s no need to leave a tip(小费).
In a coffee shop, you sit at the counter or at a table. You don’t wait for the waitress to show you where to sit. She usually brings you coffee when you sit down. You tell her what you’d like to eat and she brings it to you. You pay the cashier as you leave.
In a family restaurant the atmosphere (气氛) is casual (随意的), but the waitress shows you where to sit. Often the waitress tells you her name, but you don’t need to tell her yours. If you don’t eat everything, your waitress gives you a doggy bag to take your food home. You add an extra fifteen percent to the bill as a tip.
In top class restaurants, you need a reservation (预约) and you need to arrive on time. The waiter shows you where to sit. If you have wine, he may ask you to taste it. You can only refused it if it tastes bad, not if you don’t like it. When you get your bill, check it and then add fifteen to twenty percent to it as a tip for the waiter.

One is not born able to speak a language. One is born able to make a noise. I have heard babies cry in America and in China. I can’t tell any difference. But when I hear someone from America speak English and hear someone speak Chinese, I can tell you there are a lot of differences.
I believe a common problem with Chinese students’ learning English is that they were not taught to think in English. They have an idea spoken in English want to translate the idea into Chinese, then they think in Chinese of the proper reply and translate it into English. After a long period of speaking the language, one begins to think in the foreign naturally. You’ll learn faster if you begin to think in English at the very beginning of your study. Many students ask me: What can I do to improve my spoken English?
My reply is : The more English you speak, the better English you will speak. There are many things you can do to improve your spoken English. Of course, the best way is to live where English is spoken as a language of the country.
