Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen! Welcome to England! We hope that your visit here will be a pleasant one. Today, I would like to draw your attention to a few of our laws.
The first one is about drinking. Now, you may not buy alcohol in this country if you are under l8 years of age, nor may your friends buy it for you.
Secondly, noise. Enjoy yourselves by all means, but please don’t make unnecessary noise, especially at night. We ask you to respect other people who may wish to be quiet.
Then, crossing the road. Be careful. The traffic moves on the left side of the road in this country. Use zebra crossings and do not take any chances when crossing the road.
My next point is about litter. It is an offence(违法行为) to drop litter in the street. When you have something to throw away, please put it in your pocket and take it home, or put it in a litter bin.
Finally, as regards smoking, it is against the law to buy cigarettes or tobacco if you are under l6 years of age.
I'd like to finish by saying that if you require any help or assistance, you should contact your local police station, who will be pleased to help you.
Now, are there any questions?

“Keep your eyes on the ball.” That is good advice when you are on the playing field, and good advice for everyday life. “Keep your mind on what’s important” is the way I’d put it. But people are funny. They think too much about the details(细节).
I had a secretary once. She was very hardworking. I ran a school and people used to call up to enroll(登记) for courses. Berry used to get angry at the phone. “If they keep on ringing, I’ll never get my typing done!” she’d shouted.
People just don’t see the big picture. One evening, after leaving work, I was sitting next to a man on the train. I was feeling tired. My eyes fell on the paper he had spread out in front of him. You know how you feel to read over someone’s shoulder?
I read the page and leaned back. I guessed I was waiting for him to turn it. After a while, I realized — he wasn’t turning the page. He just kept on reading.
Now if you knew the page he was reading, you’d know that there weren’t many words on the page to read anyway. The layout was mostly pictures. So I turned to the man and said,” You know, you really read very slowly.”
“What do you mean?” he asked. “Well,” I told him, “I read the page in about a minute, and you have taken about ten. And you are still reading. You know,” I went on, “If you learned to read faster, you could get more reading done.” He remained silent for a minute or two. “If I read too fast, my paper wouldn’t last me to my station.”
(  ) 34. The writer wasn’t satisfied with his secretary because __________.
           A. she was lazy                                          B. she was easy to get angry
           C. she couldn’t finish typing on time         D. she didn’t put the important first
(  ) 35. The passenger read the newspaper just__________.

(  ) 36. The writer thinks that people seem to need a sense of__________.
          A. what to read first     B. how to read fast
C. what is important D. what is interesting
(  ) 37. The article is mainly developed by __________.
A. giving examples                            B. explaining reasons
C. listing suggestions                          D. showing different opinions
(C)
Book Review(书评)—The Snake-Stone by Berlie Doherty
The background: Urban England (the cities), but also rural England (the countryside).
The theme: The main theme is about a teenage research of self-discovery. In this book, the hero searched for his mother who separated him at his early age. It also focuses on love, getting on with others, being courageous and trying to deal with doubts, troubles and worries.
As the book moves to a close, James’ swimming coach says to him: “You are not like a kid obeying instructions any more. You are swimming like a young man who knows where he is going.”
The characters: James is the hero of the story. He is a top swimmer, and has a comfortable life with his foster parents (养父母). The other characters, James’ parents, his swimming coach, best friend, the villagers, people he meets on his journey, are pictured vividly(生动地).
The turning point: The turning point in the story comes while James’ foster parents are away in London, and he wonders who his birth mother is. The only thing he has is a fossil(化石) — “the snake stone”. His birth mother left it behind along with a note on which she had written: “Take good care of James”.
The journey: Instead of going to London, James decides to find his birth mother. With the help of his geography teacher, James sets off for the village where his mother might be found. James has painful, challenging, but also humorous and happy travels. The mother he finally meets, Anne, has a low but powerful voice in the novel. He comes to understand why she left him at a stranger’s door fifteen years before. Although the meeting is not long, it leaves him with a feeling of completeness.
(  ) 38. What do the coach’s words in Paragraph 3 suggest?
A. James is a hardworking swimmer.          B. James is a hopeful swimmer.
C. James is an independent young man.        D. James is an outgoing young man. (  )
39. The “snake stone” in the novel is__________ .
A. a note from a stranger                        B. a gift from the swimming coach
C. a fossil left by the foster parents             D. a stone left by the birthmother
(  ) 40. Which of the following is true about the novel?
A. The story has a good ending.
B. The story takes place in the city of London.
C. The turning point comes after the hero meets his birth mother.
D. The theme of the novel is only about a teenage research of self-discovery.
(  ) 41. It can be concluded that James’ journey is _________.
A. disappointing          B. boring                   C. comfortable            D. valuable
(D)
“Now!' whispered Suki. “Quick, while the clerk's not looking.'
Heart beating faster, Linda slid(滑落) two earrings into her purse. She looked bored as she followed her friends Suki and Jill out of the store, but inside she felt frightened.
'I can't believe you made me do that,' Linda cried.
'Relax,' said Jill. 'Everybody does it sometimes. And we didn't make you do it. '
She said nothing, but Linda knew she wouldn't have done that on her own. She was just experiencing huge peer(同伴)  pressure.
Sometimes, though, the stresses in your life can actually come from your peers. They may pressure you into doing something you're uncomfortable with, such as shoplifting(入店行窃), drinking or taking dangerous risks when driving a car.
The peer pressure can be powerful and hard to resist(抵制). A person might feel pressure to do something just because others are doing it. Peer pressure can influence a person to do something that is relatively harmless — or something that has more serious results. Giving in(屈从) to the pressure to dress a certain way is one thing — going along with the crowd to drink or smoke is another.
The people who are most easily influenced will follow someone’s lead first. Then others may go along, too — so it can be easy to think, 'It must be OK. Everyone else is doing it. They must know what they're doing. ' Before you know it, many people are going along with the crowd — perhaps on something they might not do.
Responding(做出反应) to peer pressure is part of human nature — but some people are more possibly to give in, and others are better able to resist. People who are low on confidence and those who easily follow others could be more possibly to give in to a risky challenge or suggestion. People who are unsure of themselves, new to the group, or inexperienced with peer pressure may also be more possibly to give in, too.
(  ) 42. The story in the beginning serves as __________.
A. a lesson to young people                                B. an example of peer pressure
C. a warning of safety in shops                                 D. an excuse of bad behavior
(  ) 43. Which of the following would probably be a kind of peer pressure?
A. You pick flowers in the park.
B. You copy in the exam to get good grades.
C. You try smoking at parties as your friends do.
D. You fight with your friends because they laugh at you.
(  ) 44. People may take a risky challenge because __________.
A. they want to get more experience
B. they want to get more money
C. they don’t want to be different from others
D. they don’t want to be influenced by others
(  ) 45. The writer tries to tell us that peer pressure __________.
A. is normal in our society                      B. makes people more confident
C. does more good than harm                     D. happens only among young people
